The Development and Initial Validation of the Adult Coping Inventory

There are few psychometrically sound measures of coping in adults. Widely used have highly unstable sub-scale analyses, were developed on homogenous samples, and outdated. The scarcity empirically derived instruments is concerning given that skills linked to a variety positive negative physical mental health outcomes (e.g., substance use, depression). Thus, the aim current study was develop measure adults: Adult Coping Inventory (ACI). consisted three phases: Phase 1 generate an initial item pool. After eliminating redundant items, 124 items remained. purpose 2 eliminate based frequency factor loadings. A diverse sample 526 adults participated study. Following generation elimination, exploratory analysis produced 57-item, five-factor model which included following subscales: Problem Solving, Mindfulness, Maladaptive Coping, Social Support, Avoidance. Overall, reliability ACI excellent internal consistency factors ranged from adequate excellent. Evidence convergent, concurrent, incremental validity questionnaire also established. Results provide support for psychometric properties ACI.
